Afternoon Tea at The AdolphusIn the polished manner of the great European hotels, The Adolphus serves Afternoon Tea in the Lobby Living Room from 3 to 5 o’clock, Thursday through Sunday.  Special occasion teas—for holidays, graduations, and bridal showers—are also offered throughout the year.  The hotel offers a wide assortment of Mighty Leaf international teas, including Darjeeling Makabairi, Rainforest Mint, Earl Gold, Wild Blackberry, Orange Jasmine, Vanilla Bean, and Pear Caramel.  Herbal blends, such as African Nectar and Chamomile Citrus Blossom, and green teas, such as Green Tea Tropical, are also on the menu.

Served with these teas are the traditional cucumber and watercress sandwiches, and English scones topped with Devonshire cream and raspberry marmalade.  The Adolphus pastry kitchen also prepares a selection of petit fours, opera cakes, fresh fruit tarts, miniature éclairs, almond Madelines, and chocolate truffles.  Each table is set with Villeroy and Boch china, fine silver, and crisp white linens. A pianist entertains tea guests at the ornately carved 1893 Steinway, a piano that once graced the New York home of the famed Guggenheim family.

The millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim, it may be recalled, died heroically when he declined to get into a lifeboat after the R.M.S. Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic.  Both built in 1912, the Titanic and The Adolphus were the highest expression of the Gilded Age.  Fortunately, The Adolphus has proved to be unsinkable.  The cost of Afternoon Tea is inclusive of tax, gratuity and complimentary valet parking.

“When beer Baron Adolphus Busch built Dallas’ Adolphus hotel in 1912 ...  he may not have had teatime in mind, but he provided a virtually perfect place for it...”
