French Room Memories Contest
May 2007 “Memories” Winner
Our May winning entry:
My dining experience at the French Room is likely different than most. I wasn’t there to celebrate an anniversary. I wasn’t there to become engaged. In fact, I wasn’t even with anyone. I was alone and in Dallas on a business trip.
I have always loved French cuisine. Growing up near Cincinnati, I ate at the Maisonette on a few occasions. Until it recently closed, it had been a five star restaurant longer than any restaurant in the country. Also, until recently, my favorite dining experiences had been there. That was until last Wednesday, at the French Room.
Upon entering the room, I knew I was in for a beautiful evening. The chandeliers, the flowers, the candles…. Carlos explained the history of the hotel and restaurant to me. He pointed out that the colors in the Venetian glass on the chandeliers matched the colors of the room. Everything was perfect.
Then came the food. I got a “chef’s surprise” which was a lovely mix of lobster, wild asparagus and noodles. It was very light and wonderful. I had the veal medallions, a dish I have had before, but never comparable to this. Each bite was a delight. In an evening of marvels, the grand marnier soufflé was the star. I have never had a lighter, more delicate soufflé. I asked the sommelier to pick my wines. He brilliantly matched my dishes with wines I would never have thought to pick. It doubled the dining experience.
Carlos and the staff made me feel so comfortable. A woman eating alone isn’t always made to feel welcome in restaurants. Sometimes I have been to places that put me in the back and basically ignore me. But this staff paid as much attention to me as if I were the Queen of England. I left with great memories, beautiful roses, breakfast rolls for the morning and a few pictures I stole with my cell phone camera. I will make one of these pictures my wallpaper on my computer. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
