The experience of The French Room at the Adolphus is etched in my memory forever. In life there are times when during an experience you know deep in your soul that this experience will be in your best memory file. My husband and I were married on December 28, 1973, and moved to Dallas in 1976. We were living on pennies, as I was a teacher with a salary of $6,000 and my husband was working for slightly more money. In 1978, when our first child was born, I chose to quit work to stay home with the baby. In 1982 our second child was born, and needless to say money was a major concern in our life. My husband and I collect and love to admire antiques. We appreciate the beauty of maintaining buildings, furniture, and items from the past. We had been told that we would enjoy the ambience of The Adolphus, especially The French room. We saved $10 a month for one year in an antique jar for the sole purpose of having the opportunity to visit The Adolphus and eat at The French Room on our ninth anniversary in 1982. We would have loved to stay in the hotel for the night but this was just not possible financially. I do believe our mouths and eyes were wide open the entire evening. December 28, 1982 was magical! The hotel was decorated beautifully for the holidays with a huge gingerbread house covered with chocolate, and a beautiful, huge Christmas tree. The antique wood and carpets, and even the bathrooms were jaw dropping, including the porcelain match box holders (which I still have in my cabinet today). However, nothing prepared us for the beautiful French Room! Walking into the room felt like instant Europe with the opulence and the beautiful hand painted ceiling. The service was impeccable and the food incredibly delicious. We ate in this wonderful atmosphere and never felt more in love. It was the most wonderful anniversary present ever, one we have, and will talk about many times.
